The Stanley Foundation, in collaboration with the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, is organizing a conference on the theme of US-China Regional Dialogue on Nuclear Disarmament and Nonproliferation.
The global community is at a crossroads concerning our shared nuclear future. The threat of proliferation of nuclear weapons and material, joined with the still-remaining legacies of Cold War arsenals and policies have pushed forward new calls for the resumption of progress on nuclear disarmament. At the same time, global energy needs and environmental pressures have ignited the desire to pursue greatly expanded civilian nuclear energy programs, with dozens of countries expressing interest in building new domestic nuclear reactors and associated infrastructure. To achieve this enlarged civilian nuclear future, stronger mechanisms will need to be developed to ensure safety, security, and nonproliferation.
The intersection of momentum on both military and civilian nuclear issues presents a clear opportunity and need for multilateral discussions among critical leaders and stakeholders. With multiple concerns on both the military and civilian nuclear side, Asian dialogues within the region and with key external players such as the United States will be critical to making a smooth transition to a world that decreasingly relies on nuclear technologies for its strategic security, even while finding sustainable methods for providing renewable energy sources for its citizenry. The Stanley Foundation, in cooperation with Fudan University, hopes that this conference can play a beneficial role in meeting that objective.
