The Annual Community Read for the Environment (ACRE) promotes reading, writing, and concern about the environment.
Please join in one, several, or all of the activities promoted through this brochure. All events are free and open to the public unless stated otherwise.
Trash-A-Thon
Middle School Community Cleanup Project

Groups of students from both middle schools will team up to clean up our community. This year, the Trash-A-Thon will help raise money for Charity:Water. You can help with this event by volunteering or sponsoring a cleanup crew.
Preserving the Pearl of the Mississippi

Here is your chance to see how fun and relaxing canoeing and kayaking can be. Basic instructions will be given and all equipment, including life jackets, is provided.
30th Annual Kids Fishing Seminar

Learn the basics of fishing. All are welcome, though the seminar is especially for kids of elementary school age. There will be lots of door prizes, tackle packets given to all participants, and T-shirts for the first 100 kids in K-5th grades who preregister. Registration forms will be available at the Learning Center and through the schools beginning May 13.

Come to the Kids Fishing Seminar and then put your newfound fishing knowledge to use by participating in the Kids Fishing Derby. Prizes will be awarded in several fish categories and age groups. Registration will open immediately after the fishing seminar ends (approx. 10:45 a.m)

The Cedar River is right in our backyard and it needs some attention. Teams will use canoes to collect trash along the shoreline from Jack Shuger Memorial Park to the Saulsbury Bridge Recreation Area. The goal is to make this stretch of the river safer for the animals who live there and the people who use it for recreation. Lunch is provided and preregistration is requested.
In addition, summer camps for youth, including two canoe trips for middle-school-age children, will be held during the summer months through Muscatine County Conservation. Nominal registration fees are required. Please use the above contacts for more information.
Riverfront Field Trip

Central and West Middle School students will participate in many educational sessions and activities to enhance their knowledge of water resources. Presenters represent various government, education, and nonprofit organizations. Students will learn about the river that flows through their town—and enjoy a ride on the Pearl Button Paddlewheel riverboat!
